The Eire Og U21 footballers won the Glenville cup last night (Tuesday 12th) against O’Donovan Rossa with a strong start proving vital to their victory. At a blustery Ovens Eire Og went 2-5 0-0 ahead after ten minutes. The goals coming from John Cooper and man of the match and captain Brian Hurley who would end up with 1-5 from play. Eire Og got up and running with two points from Dylan Foley one from a free and one from play and then came the two goals coming within 30 seconds of each other. An Anthony Doherty sandwiched between two Hurley points made it 2-5 0-0 after ten minutes. O’Donovan Rossa then got on the scoresheet for the first time. Hurley restored their eleven point advantage but then Skibbereen hit a purple patch scoring 1-3 without reply to make it 2-6 1-4 after 23 minutes but three on the trot from Eire Og through two Doherty frees and Hurley made it 2-9 1-4 at the short whistle. Although Hurley got the first score of the second half Skibb took over, scoring six points in a row between the 35th and 46th minute to make it 2-10 1-10. Foley restored Eire Og’s four point lead after 48 minutes to make it 2-11 1-10. But Eire Og defended gallantly and it never got closer than three points with goalkeeper Eoin Kelleher also having a superb game making a couple of outstanding saves. A Doherty free sealed victory for Eire Og in injury time. So Eire Og move into Saturday’s championship clash with Naomh Aban in Kilmichael at 3PM as Glenville cup champions 2019
